THE PROFESSIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE
INTERPRETER'S
HANDBOOK
"Amazing! THE PROFESSIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER'S HANDBOOK is a concise and easy to use resource text for all interpreters, interpreting agencies, and consumers of interpreting services. Linda Humphreys text illustrates the how-tos of running a small private practice, the ins-and-outs of paperwork, and helpful organizational tips. Linda also clearly explains how to prepare for a myriad of interpreting assignments and provides contact information for Interpreter Training Programs, Deaf and government agencies throughout the country, and much more. THE HANDBOOK is written in a comprehensive, easy to read and re-read style that professionals should have in their library. TWO THUMBS UP!"

“Finally! A hands-on, no holds barred, resource book on the
practical, everyday, experiential aspects of sign language interpreting.
Having graduated from an ITP, taught interpreter training workshops
and worked as an interpreter for 25+ years, I can see how this book
will be a valuable resource to interpreters in our profession. Linda
has bridged the gap between the academics taught in interpreter
training programs and the reality of what it takes to develop a
successful interpreting practice.”

“WOW! This HANDBOOK is an excellent resource! As a consumer
of sign language interpreting services, I hope that professional
interpreters, student interpreters, and anyone who is considering
becoming an interpreter will read this book! It provides a thorough,
fair, and well-balanced view of the profession. Its extensive resources
make Ms. Humphreys’ HANDBOOK equally as valuable for both
state and local government agencies as well as for all service providers
and agencies that work with individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing
and that utilize sign language interpreters. It is also an excellent
tool for interpreting training programs.
I have worked with Ms. Humphreys for many years. She is an exceptional
example of a sign language interpreter with a high level of business
professionalism. It is my belief that everyone will benefit from
following her practical and straightforward advice.”

"Kudos to Linda Humphreys for providing professional interpreters with such a
wealth of information in one consolidated place. Being a professional
interpreter for only 4 years, THE HANDBOOK is extremely valuable in setting
up a business and taking the steps needed to be a responsible and healthy
professional. Thanks to Linda for her willingness and effort to put her
years of practice into a resource for new and veteran interpreters to
benefit from. She is brilliant! : )"

“Would that I had had a beginning resource guide 50 years
ago, I would have known quicker and sooner what was involved. Anything
that would have made my job more certain would have been much appreciated.
Therefore I can recommend Linda Humphreys’ THE PROFESSIONAL
SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER’S HANDBOOK as a basic resource for
the interested and as a training and discussion guide for interpreter
training programs. I see this work filling the gap of materials
needed in this field.”
Even for those currently working as professional interpreters, this
HANDBOOK should be required reading! Ms. Humphreys’ book provides
an understanding of what true professionalism requires and be a
catalyst to increase professionalism."

“THE PROFESSIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER’S HANDBOOK
is the best how-to book on the market! Linda Humphreys shares her
comprehensive knowledge about the field of sign language interpreting
in a book that eclipses all others. It’s easy to understand
and will be a valuable refresher for experienced interpreters and
a primer for interpreting students. As a professional interpreter
for over 15 years, I find this book to be expertly written. It includes
practical advice for handling “vague” situations we
all encounter at one time or another. Some of the issues addressed
in this book are not taught in interpreter training programs. As
a Senior Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for Deaf Persons, I
am often called upon to evaluate and hire sign language interpreters
and have encountered many who seem ill prepared. This HANDBOOK should
be required reading!”

“As someone who trains counselors and other advocacy service
providers, I can highly recommend Linda’s book as an extensive
and comprehensive resource of sign language interpreting resources.
Among the book’s resources are information on the Code of
Ethics, interpreter training programs, valid certifications, and
D/deafness and interpreting related organizations. This information
is a must-have for the library of every agency and service provider
working within the field of deafness, advocacy, career counseling,
or of any entity that hires interpreters.
As someone who hires interpreters, I have noticed that while interpreters
are usually sufficiently trained to perform the task of interpreting,
they lack training on how to successfully become self-employed,
private-practice business people. Linda’s book covers all
the bases. It is the most comprehensive and practical book of its
kind on the market and addresses all the questions about sign language
interpreting you may have, and many you’ve likely never thought
of. I cannot recommend it more enthusiastically as “must”
reading for anyone in the profession or for anyone considering the
profession.”
